Neglected Beauty

Chicago-native Carey Primeau has been taking pictures since around 2001. In the last few years, Carey has dedicated his work to capturing our cities’ proudest architectural achievements at their weakest points, in an on-going series titled “Neglected Beauty”. This visual study of abandoned landmarks, throughout Chicago and beyond, blurs the line between art and sociology like few have before. And despite recent successes, such as a feature on dailycandy.com and a growing number of gallery showings, Carey remains humble and focused, feeling that he is taking part of something much bigger than himself.

While in these spaces, I am consumed with emotion; a spiritual sensation overpowers my body and I realize that these buildings are no longer ours. They have become part of the landscape, a piece of the puzzle, an undisputed element of the environment, and once planted and rooted to the ground, take on a life of their own… I seem to be on a continual quest to preserve our architectural heritage by attempting to prevent the unproductive trend of demolition. These photos are an attempt to show the beauty of these spaces and to encourage their continual existence in our environments.
