Delicious Design League

One of my favorite things about working at festivals and fairs is all the great people you get to meet. A year ago I got the chance to meet Jason from Delicious Design League, these guys design and print some sick posters (check the pics for proof). In the near future Novem and Delicious will be collaborating on designs to bring you limited runs of posters and shirts.

Here are some extra questions we had for Jason :

Who does Delicious Design League consist of ? What does everyone do?

Billy Baumann (principle designer/ creative director)
Jason Teegarden-Downs (principle project and account manager/ screen printer)

Can you talk us through what the creative process is like when it comes to designing a gig poster?

It’s not far different from any other design job.

-Research the band (what do they sound like, what are their songs about, what does they’re album art look like, album title, song titles, etc…)

-Draw thumbnails of a few concepts and layouts.

-Research art and design that achieves what we’re looking to do, and think through how and why it works.

-Pick the best idea and blow it out.

The creative execution is different every time based on what we use for inspiration. It could be working with old photos, pen and ink, pencils, or straight to the computer.

And what about the printing of it? What steps does the design go through before it reaches its printed stage?

The design starts off being built with the screen-printing process in mind. Using layers in photoshop or illustrator we will play with colors to find what works with each layer (creating a “mock-up”) Then we choose pantones to mix the ink, decide what colors to make transparent or opaque for different overprinting techniques. Print out films for each layer. Expose screens, set-up and print. Knowing that it may turn out different than the “mock-up”.

What are some of your favorite bands that you have done posters for?

Well, that’s a loaded question, isn’t it? We love ALL the bands we do posters for (sarcasm?..)
To name a few…
Acid Mother’s Temple, Flight Of the Concords, Devendra Banhardt…

Do you ever get compliments or complaints from bands regarding your posters?

One of our first posters, for the Gossip, was a paper doll image of Aunt Jemima in black face. With the poster I was trying to make some sort of connection between civil rights from the 60’s to Gay rights of today, but the message was lost and it was just offensive. The band had the club take down all the posters – they were polite about it.

Oh, and another time I changed one of the band names from No Funeral to No Future – completely on accident. They weren’t too happy about that.

How do you guys come up with your ideas for art prints?

They are less about ideas and more about techniques or subjects we are experimenting with.

It seems like there are tons of poster companies out there, How does Delicious separate itself from the rest of them?

That’s a question we’ve been constantly trying to answer ourselves. We just do the best work we can with every job, and hope that that helps. We really are trying to get away from the pigeon-hole of being a “poster company”. We think of ourselves as a full service design boutique with in-house screen printing. We just love to do posters, so we have a lot of them to show. They are the most visible work that we do, I suppose.

Have you worked on any collaborations in the past? If so, who did you work on them with?

Yes, we did a Teith poster with Anne Benjamin, and an Arthur Lee benefit poster with Steve Krakow. I’m sure there are others that I’m not thinking of.

Are you excited about your upcoming collaboration with Novem?

No, I hate those guys! They’ve been nothing but rude to my family and me as long as I can remember.

Stay tuned for the collab ya’ll…
